Fibrocystic Breast Lumps
Fibrocystic Breast Lumps are cysts that form in the breast
tissue. Many women have a condition called Fibrocystic
Breast Disease which occurs when the breast tissue forms
benign lumps during the monthly hormonal changes. 80%
of these lumps are benign, but can be uncomfortable as
they increase in size and tenderness right before the
menstrual cycle. They can also be found in both breasts
simultaneously. Occasionally there will also be a discharge
from the nipples as well. The lumps are actually milk
ducts and surrounding tissues that have grown and expanded
into cysts. The cysts may feel hard, rubbery and may either
be a single lump or a thickening in an area of the breast.
Fibrocystic cysts appear most noticeable to women in their 40’s and are less likely to occur in post-menopausal women. These cysts do not usually require treatment, although your doctor can recommend therapies to relieve tenderness during your menstrual cycle. It is suspected that caffeine may contribute to fibrocystic breast disease and should be reduced or eliminated if you are diagnosed with this condition.
Simple CystAnother type of cyst found in the breast is a Simple Cyst, which is a fluid filled sac that may form in both breasts. These can vary in size and may be single or multiple. These can be treated by a fine needle aspiration which is done during the evaluation at your doctor’s office.
Fibro AdenomasFibro adenomas are the most common types of cysts found in women’s breasts. They are rubbery lumps that move freely in the breast tissue when pushed about. They are usually solid, round and painless. They typically result from the excess formation of milk producing glands called Lobules and the surrounding breast tissue. These are more common in women ages 20 to 30 years of age and of African American decent. Both of these cysts can be surgically removed.
Always notify your doctor if you find a lump in your breast or have discharge from your nipples. A mammogram can detect lumps and an ultrasound may be ordered to determine if the cyst is fluid filled or a solid mass. A biopsy of the breast tissue may be necessary to rule out a cancerous condition and some breast lumps can be resolved as they collapse during this process.
