Signs And Symptoms Of Depression.

Before we discuss the signs and symptoms of clinical depression, I would like to give a definition of what this medical condition is. Most physicians agree that clinical depression is a prolonged, overwhelming feeling of sadness that lasts for at least two weeks or longer. This depression is usually accompanied by a variety of signs and symptoms. Not every individual will show all the signs. Some will only show a few.

If you believe you are suffering from clinical depression do not wait, call your doctor immediately and get help. Depression is not something you have to live with. The sooner you call, the sooner you will feel like yourself again!

Who does depression affect? Depression can affect anyone. Depression does not care about your age, gender, race or income. Depression affects millions of individuals each year. Depression can strike anyone.

What is the cause of my depression? Depression can be triggered by high stress such as the loss of a loved, the change of a job or financially difficulties. Even a happy event such as getting married can trigger depression. Physcial, emotional and sexual abuse can all trigger depression. Sometimes depression comes on for no apparent reason. If these feelings are rare, then you have nothing to worry about. If you are experiencing this type of depression frequently and for long periods of time please get help.

My Mother suffered from depression, could it be genetic? Yes, most doctors believe one can be predisposed to this condition. This does not mean you have it or ever will. Depression runs in many families, it does not affect each and every member.

Now that I have explained a little bit more about depression, I would like to give you a list of signs and symptoms. Do not panic if you feel you fall into several of these categories. Keep in mind that the definition of clinical depression is if these symptoms last for longer than two weeks. Also, everyone will have one or two of these from time to time because we all go through rough patches. If your Dad just passed away, then you have every reason in the world to be depressed. The key is if it continues beyond a reasonable period of mourning and it effects your job, your relationships and other areas of your life.

" Feelings of worthlessness. " Feeling hopeless or useless. " Trouble concentrating or making decisions. " Feeling tired all the time. " A change in sleep patterns. " Excessive worry and anxiety. " Loss of interest in activities you use to enjoy. " Depressed mood. " Overwhelming sadness. " Unusual irritability. " Feelings of inappropriate guilt. " Change in appetite. " Thoughts of suicide.
