Other Types of Cysts

Other Less Common Types of Cysts

Cystic Acne – Occur when deep cysts form in the skin that scar. Smaller cysts that don’t scar can also form when the sebaceous glands of the skin become clogged with greasy secretions which plug the openings to the hair follicles. These lumps or nodules can become inflamed or infected. Sebaceous Cysts can form in the scalp and become quite large. Cystic Acne is caused by hormonal changes brought on by puberty or bacteria that can clog the opening to the hair follicles. This is especially common around the face, chest, neck and back. Ruptured cysts can leave temporary or permanent scars. There are many over-the-counter and prescription treatments that can be recommended by your dermatologist to treat cystic acne successfully. Arachnoid Cysts – are fluid filled sacs that develop on the membrane called the arachnoid which covers the spinal cord and the brain. Many of these cysts are asymptomatic there are cases where symptoms do occur. Seizures, headaches and an abnormal accumulation of excessive cerebrospinal fluid (hydrocephalus) can form in the brain. The causes of arachnoid cysts are not known.

Cysticercosis – is a rare and infectious disease caused by the infestation and accumulation of larval tapeworm cysts (cestodes) in the tissues of the body. This type of cystic infection can affect the brain, causing a condition called neurocysticercosis. Although symptoms can vary from case to case, if cysticerci are found in the brain the central nervous system can be compromised. Abnormalities such as seizures and headaches may occur. It can also affect the eyes, skin, heart and spinal cord.

Fibrous Dysplasia – is a condition that refers to a chronic condition wherein cystic bone growth may develop or the bone marrow becomes diseases and forms benign cysts. This condition is characterized by uneven bone growth, brittleness, pain and deformity within the affected bones. This disorder can affect only a single bone (monostotic fibrous dysplasia or Jaffe-Lichtenstein disease) or may affect multiple bone structures (polyostotic fibrous dysplasia). Fibrous Dysplasia appears during childhood and bone lesions generally cease during puberty. These cystic lesions are often painful, widespread and cause deformities. The bones most often affected are the skull, facial bones, ribs, femur (thigh bone), tibia (shin bone), humerus (upper arm) and the pelvis. Sometimes the spine (vertebrae) bones are also affected. It is common for most affected individuals to experience repeated bone fractures. At this time the exact cause of this disease is not known.

Ganglion Cysts - are small sac-like cysts filled with a jelly-like clear fluid that often appear as bumps on the wrists and hands. They can also form on the shoulders, knees, feet and ankles. They are benign cysts that grow out of a joint capsule, which protects the joint by surrounding it. Also, a tendon sheath which covers a tendon (the ropelike fibers connecting bone and muscle) can also be affected. Ganglions seem to appear very suddenly as bumps that may be as small as a seed or larger than a cherry. A ganglion located on the leg may grow as big as 4 inches (10.2 cm). These cysts tend to grow with activity, which causes more fluid to collect in the cystic sac. They may also break, shrink or go away on their own. Although ganglions are usually small and rather painless bumps, they may become tender and swollen when touched. Activity and pressure can increase the pain because the cyst puts pressure on the nerves that pass near the joint. Another symptom is tingling in the forearm, hand, fingers and ganglions can also affect joint motion or weaken your grip.

A type of ganglion called a Mucous cyst ganglion is usually small, but painful and is associated with Osteoarthritis of the hands. This type of ganglion is found at the joint nearest to the fingernail.

Anyone can get a ganglion cyst, although adults between the ages of 15 and 40 years of age are most commonly affected. Women are three times as likely to get them as men. Children very rarely develop ganglions and if they do, they usually go away on their own.

Although the exact cause is not known it is believed that ganglions may be related to:

  • Inflammation or irritation or the joint capsule or tendon sheath.
  • Overuse or repetitive motions, such as those we do at work.
  • An injury.

Ganglions can often be diagnosed by their location and appearance. An X-ray, MRI or ultrasound may be used especially if osteoarthritis is suspected. Treatment is often unnecessary as ganglions usually resolve on their own. Only when they are unsightly, painful or limit activity does one need professional help. Non surgical treatments such as massaging the ganglion to reduce fluid buildup, wearing a splint or draining it with a needle and syringe (aspiration) are helpful if needed and they can be removed surgically if necessary.

Pineal Cysts – are non cancerous fluid filled sacs located in the area of the brain where the pineal gland is found. Pineal cysts that are small (.5 cm or less) are not unusual and are often found during routine neurological examinations. The smaller cysts are asymptomatic, yet larger ones can cause a variety of symptoms including; headaches, hydrocephalus (an excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid on the brain) which causes pressure on the brain. Vision abnormalities as well as other more serious conditions can occur such as seizures, and loss of consciousness. The cause of pineal cysts is not yet known.

Polycystic Kidney Disease – is a genetically inherited disorder that occurs as multiple fluid filled sacs or cysts form on the kidneys. The cysts are dangerous as they can replace the normal kidney tissue and lead to kidney disease or failure. This is a complex disease that must be treated by a Nephrologist (Kidney doctor).
